MPLS Training for Your Team — Implementing Cisco MPLS

MPLS has a peculiar status: it carries a huge share of the world’s business traffic, yet many of the engineers operating it learned only the configuration recipes, not the machinery. That works until the first opaque fault — labels that vanish, VPN routes that leak, a path that ignores the IGP — and then the recipe book is useless. Implementing Cisco MPLS is the full-week foundation course: label switching from first principles, LDP behavior and failure modes, L3VPN mechanics on MP-BGP, complex VPN topologies, Internet access designs and traffic engineering basics.

It remains the standard entry into the MPLS world for both audiences that run it — service providers selling VPN services and large enterprises operating private cores — and the necessary grounding before a segment routing migration, which is taught everywhere by contrast with LDP and RSVP-TE.

We organize delivery through authorized partners and vetted instructors — live online in your time zone, on site, or as a private group with examples drawn from provider or enterprise practice to match your team.

Who this course is for

  • Network engineers at providers and enterprises deploying or inheriting an MPLS core
  • Engineers who configure MPLS VPNs daily but never learned the machinery underneath
  • WAN architects evaluating MPLS against newer transport options
  • Candidates building toward service provider or advanced enterprise routing roles

MPLS vs alternatives: which to choose

Factual criteria only — level, duration, audience and certification. The right choice depends on your team's starting point and stack.

Cisco SEGRTE201 (Segment Routing)

The successor technology course: segment routing replaces LDP and RSVP-TE machinery in modern cores. Take MPLS first for the foundations — SR is taught by contrast with them — then SEGRTE201 when a migration is on the roadmap.

Cisco SPCOR (SP Core)

The CCNP Service Provider core, where MPLS is one chapter of a broad curriculum with certification attached. Choose SPCOR for the certification path; the MPLS course when you want the transport technology itself in a full week of depth.

A custom intensive

Enterprise team that only consumes L3VPNs, or a NOC that troubleshoots but never designs? A custom 2–3 day program takes the relevant slice of MPLS — operations and troubleshooting, say — at your estate's depth.

Need only part of MPLS?

If your team needs a subset of this program — or a mix of topics from several courses — we build a custom 2–4 day intensive on our own materials, shaped by your infrastructure. One custom program typically replaces 2–3 catalog courses.

MPLS: frequently asked questions

Is MPLS still worth learning in the segment routing era?

Yes — the installed base is enormous, most L3VPN mechanics carry over unchanged to SR-based cores, and segment routing itself is taught by contrast with LDP and RSVP-TE. Engineers without MPLS foundations struggle in exactly the migrations meant to retire it.

Is this a service provider course or an enterprise course?

The technology is the same on both sides. Providers run MPLS to sell VPN services; large enterprises — banks, utilities, groups with many sites — run it as a private core. The course serves both, and private groups get examples weighted to their world.

How much BGP knowledge does the course assume?

A working command of BGP fundamentals, since MPLS L3VPNs are built on multiprotocol BGP. Engineers shaky on BGP should take the BGP course first — the pair is a common sequence, and we can arrange both with the same provider.

Does the course include troubleshooting?

Throughout — label distribution failures, VPN route leaking and reachability problems are practiced in the lab, because MPLS faults are notoriously opaque to engineers who only know the configuration steps. Understanding the control plane is what makes the tickets tractable.
