SANIMP Training for Your Team — ONTAP SAN Implementation

Block storage is unforgiving: a NAS misconfiguration produces a support ticket, a SAN misconfiguration produces a database outage. ONTAP SAN Implementation trains storage teams to build and run block services with the discipline the workloads deserve — LUN and namespace provisioning, transport choice across FC, iSCSI and NVMe, zoning and igroup hygiene, and the host-side multipathing configuration where most real incidents are born.

The course completes the picture for admins who know ONTAP from its NAS side, and gives teams migrating from other array platforms the ONTAP-specific layer on top of transferable SAN fundamentals. It runs on current ONTAP 9.15/9.16 releases, where NVMe sits alongside FC and iSCSI as a mainstream transport.

We organize delivery through authorized partners and vetted instructors who run production block estates — live online in your time zone, on site, or as a private group aligned to your host platforms and migration plans.

Who this course is for

  • Storage administrators adding block workloads to an ONTAP estate
  • Teams running databases or virtualization on SAN storage
  • Engineers migrating block storage from another array platform
  • Admins whose NAS-centric ONTAP knowledge needs the SAN half

SANIMP vs alternatives: which to choose

Factual criteria only — level, duration, audience and certification. The right choice depends on your team's starting point and stack.

ONTAP Cluster Administration

The prerequisite: cluster fundamentals, provisioning and operations. SAN Implementation assumes that material and concentrates on block protocols, host integration and pathing — take the courses in that order.

ONTAP Data Protection Administration

The replication and DR course. SAN workloads raise the stakes on both: block storage usually carries databases. Teams building a complete skill set typically plan SAN Implementation and Data Protection as consecutive steps after Cluster Administration.

A custom intensive

A migration from another vendor's array, or an NVMe adoption project? A custom workshop can rehearse your exact host matrix and cutover plan instead of the generic lab topology.

Need only part of SANIMP?

If your team needs a subset of this program — or a mix of topics from several courses — we build a custom 2–4 day intensive on our own materials, shaped by your infrastructure. One custom program typically replaces 2–3 catalog courses.

SANIMP: frequently asked questions

How much SAN background is assumed?

ONTAP administration basics are required; prior SAN experience helps but is not mandatory. The course explains the block-storage chain — target, fabric, initiator, multipath — from the storage administrator's seat, so NAS-centric admins can cross over successfully.

Does the course cover NVMe as well as FC and iSCSI?

Yes — current ONTAP 9 releases (9.15/9.16) treat NVMe as a first-class block transport alongside FC and iSCSI, and the course presents all three with their operational differences, so transport choices become decisions rather than defaults.

Is host-side configuration included, or storage-side only?

Both, because block-storage incidents almost always live at the boundary: initiator configuration, multipathing behavior and the host settings that determine whether a path failure is invisible or an outage. Labs exercise the full chain.

We are migrating from another storage vendor — will this course map our knowledge?

That is a common attendee profile. Core SAN concepts transfer directly; the course supplies the ONTAP-specific layer — SVMs, LUN provisioning, igroups and pathing behavior — and instructors regularly field translate-from-vendor-X questions during delivery.
