NFSAD Training for Your Team — ONTAP NFS Administration

NFS problems rarely announce themselves as NFS problems — they surface as a database that stalls, a VMware datastore that disconnects, or a user who can suddenly read someone else’s home directory. ONTAP NFS Administration teaches storage teams to see the whole chain: export policies and the access they actually grant, NFSv3 versus NFSv4.x behavior, name services and identity mapping, and the multiprotocol logic that decides what happens when the same data is served to both UNIX and Windows clients.

The course is the natural protocol specialization after ONTAP Cluster Administration, delivered on current ONTAP 9.15/9.16 releases. It pays off fastest for teams whose critical platforms — databases, virtualization, compute farms — stand on NFS and whose troubleshooting currently relies on restarting things in hopeful order.

We organize delivery through authorized partners and vetted instructors — live online in your time zone, on site, or as a private group weighted toward the workloads your NFS estate actually serves.

Who this course is for

  • Storage administrators serving Linux and UNIX workloads from ONTAP
  • Teams running databases, VMware datastores or compute farms on NFS
  • Admins untangling export-policy or identity-mapping problems
  • Engineers adding protocol depth after ONTAP Cluster Administration

NFSAD vs alternatives: which to choose

Factual criteria only — level, duration, audience and certification. The right choice depends on your team's starting point and stack.

ONTAP Cluster Administration

The prerequisite: cluster architecture, SVMs, volumes and day-two operations. Take it first — NFS administration builds directly on that foundation and spends its time on the protocol layer, not the basics.

ONTAP SMB Administration (CIFSAD)

The Windows-side counterpart: shares, Active Directory and NTFS permissions. Choose by your client population; mixed shops that serve both protocols against the same data often schedule the two courses back to back.

A custom intensive

NFS underpinning one critical platform — a database estate, a render farm, VMware datastores? A custom short program can focus entirely on tuning and troubleshooting for that workload profile.

Need only part of NFSAD?

If your team needs a subset of this program — or a mix of topics from several courses — we build a custom 2–4 day intensive on our own materials, shaped by your infrastructure. One custom program typically replaces 2–3 catalog courses.

NFSAD: frequently asked questions

Do we need Cluster Administration before this course?

Strongly recommended. The course assumes ONTAP fundamentals — SVMs, volumes, basic networking — and dedicates its time to the NFS layer itself: exports, versions, name services and troubleshooting. Without the foundation, much of the material lands on unprepared ground.

Which ONTAP versions does the course use?

Current ONTAP 9 releases (9.15/9.16). NFS behavior is stable across recent 9.x versions, and instructors point out release-specific differences relevant to your estate — useful for teams mid-upgrade or planning one.

Does the course cover NFSv4 migrations?

Yes — version strategy is a core theme: what NFSv4.x changes about locking, identity and security compared with v3, and how to migrate workloads deliberately instead of discovering the differences in production. Labs exercise both versions.

Our environment mixes NFS and SMB access to the same data — covered?

Multiprotocol access is addressed: how ONTAP maps identities and reconciles UNIX and NTFS permissions on shared volumes. For deep SMB-side administration, the companion CIFSAD course completes the picture; many teams take both.
